When I was in highschool, 1980's, I remember studing merely to pass an exam...like most kids. Usually, you study for the test, then the rest is usually forgotten. I know I certainly don't remember much of history class. Heck, for any class for that matter.

In Japan they have it much worse. In order to get into the regular school of your choice, you have to go through exams. There is a lot of competition and stress. Japan, as well as other countries, excel better in studies than the American culture does.

I found when I was going to college (VCU), most everyone, and me included, were studying only to pass the exams. This wasn't necessarily true for the major courses but the minor-majors and minor courses.
Even today I found my own kids studying only to pass the exam and not give a hoot about remembering any of it after.

You could talk about how high school graduation exams make it so that teachers much teach exclusively for the test. You can also talk about school which do not use tests or have alternative grading systems. Good luck!
