The British Empire between 1918 and 1922 extended to 14 million square miles and was the biggest empire in history - roughly one quarter of the world.

At the peak of communism the Communist Empire extended to 13.8 million square miles but this wasn't an empire as such but a group of separate countries - principally China and The Soviet Union (as it was then).

The Mongol Empire or Mongol Hegomony of the 13th century peaked at about 12.8 million square miles.

The Spanish Colonial Empire of the late 1700's extended to about 7.5 million square miles including about half of South America.

The biggest empire that exists today is the Russian Federation which covers 6.6 million square miles.

The British empire during the reign of Queen Victoria was by far the biggest that has ever existed and the Roman Empire was the longest.
