Tie rods attach to the steering linkage. When you turn the wheel, the linkage moves and the tie rods which are attached to the wheel knuckle, moves the wheel knuckle to turn the wheels.
Balljoints allow the knuckle to move freely so you wheel has a better field of movement.
Both are extremely dangerous to drive when bad, especially if you are driving high speed.
To check tie rods, grab the end of one and try to lift, if there is any movement in the tie rod end, they are bad. As for ball joints, with the wheel up in the air ( jack the car up ) move the wheel with your hands on top and bottom, try to move the wheel in and out. If there is movement, probably bad balljoints or bearings. More than likely you would feel bad balljoints as a vibration when you drive or brake.
Take care!

I'm no expert by any means, but it has to do with the axle support of the wheels. If you have a broken tie rod, you can usually feel it when turning the wheel...you'll hear a slight clunk.
You need to get your vehicle into a repair shop asasp.

Bad tie rods are dangerous, because they are part of the steering mechanism of your car. When they get worn, you have less control over the steering. Ball joints are also critical to proper steering and suspension.

your tie rods are the connectors between your steering and the steering wheel. the ball joints support the car at critical points. ( upper and lower on both sides). only way I'd want to drive with either of these bad is to make someine else rich by letting them cash in my llife insurance

if you want one of your wheels to turn completly inwards on the highway and lose all control of being able to steer and probably wipe out then keep driving on it. Otherwise take it in. Should only be about $200-$300. I am in the same boat right now, mine is bad and Im still driving until I can come up with the cash.

It can be very dangerous it is what holds your wheels strait SO when they get worn bad enough they can break and when you are going down the interstate 70 mph and one side breaks your tire jest goes in any direction it wants and you cant control the vehicle

They are an importand part of your front wheel steering. If they go bad and pop out of place, you'll lose steering. You should get it fix pronto.
