You can download books for free if they are not under copyright, so whatever sites you find with free books, you will find classical works which are considered public domain. That is what you will find at the guttenberg site, for example.
You may also find "free" books, but these are usually small press stuff, or publications posted on the internet by the authors. They're not exactly reliable.
If you are a college student, or have access to university libraries, you can usually find e-books through their web pages. Access to them is covered by your tuition. If this is not your case, then forget about trying to find free, current books on the web.

Have you considered cassette tapes the library carries them maybe even in CD these days and you can listen with a head set while doing mindless other activities that you have to do anyway. Did it in college all the time. listen and wash dishes, dust, straiten drawers.... kill two jobs at one time. Multi-tasking and it allows you to keep your minds on the information because what your doing you could do in your sleep. lol :-)

gutenberg.org has around 18,000 free books; however, they may only be somewhat classic novels. i didn't look too far into it to remark on the diversity of the collection.
