I have only seen this software on someone’s computer. It’s a nice look for your desk top but I’m wondering what its all about. Its it better then Windows? What does the program offer? What is the difference between windows and the Gnome panel?

Actually, Gnome is just a desktop environment for the Linux operating system.

You would have to install Linux on your computer to use Gnome.

Linux in general, imo, is better than Windows. It is more secure, better supported (the entire user community supports it) and you have much more direct control of it (it is open source, so if you are brave enough you can even change how the operating system works).

I personally find it no more difficult to work in than Windows, but it is a transition if you are used to having Windows do everything for you. Since I prefer to do things for myself, I prefer Linux.

There are a number of other desktop environments for Linux. The two most popular are Gnome and KDE, but there are many many more.
