Alright all you Einsteins !!! What Bush voted against is a 41% minimum wage increase.. His bill increases minimum wage and attached to this bill is the his plan to get rid of the death tax , something the democrats don't want,(you really should find out why since it only helps the American people and not the government). The cost of living has increased(since the last increase) by 2.6% not 41%. If minimum wage were increased by such a astronomical amount this increase would lead small business owners to either lay off employees or close shop, That would cause a rise in unemployment and an increase in welfare and government support.Certainly all you Economic Majors understand this -- Don't You??????

Their message to Democrats was clear: If you want low-income Americans, who have not seen the federal minimum wage rise in almost a decade, to get a tiny bit more money, you need to provide yet more tax breaks for the very richest families in the country."Republicans are threatening to deny a $2.10 raise for 11 million Americans unless they can give away hundreds of billions to less than .2 of 1 percent of the American people," said a frustrated Reid. "The $2.10 raise is over a period of years. It should be immediate. The $2.10 an hour raise occurs if the richest of the rich get billions of dollars. It is political blackmail that reeks of desperation."But here's the really sick part: The Republican minimum wage bill, which may come to a vote on the Senate floor by the end of this week, would actually cut the salaries of hundreds of thousands of workers across seven states. The way the law passed by the House last week is written, employers in every state would be allowed to lower the base wage they pay and count tips earned toward meeting minimum wage requirements. Most states already have laws that provide for a lower minimum wage for workers such as waiters and waitresses who earn tips but, if passed, the new federal law would override laws in seven states that mandate no minimum wage difference for those earning tips at their jobs.

Which workers? The ones who are already making above the minimum wage aren't any better off, they just have to pay more for certain goods and services. The minimum wage workers fired because they are now too expensive to keep on the payrolls are certainly not happy. The workers who are priced out of the market by the wage increase may be happy, because they will never realize how the new minimum wage killed their chances of getting an entry level job.
I guess the few middle- and upper-class teenagers who'll start getting paid more will be happy....at the expense of everyone else.

What economic insanity, what outright simpleminded ignorance... A minimum wage is the government dictating to private enterprise what should be paid to its workers? Why not make the minimum wage $50/hour - so that everyone can get wealthy? Why - what is so sacred about the number that someone in government dictates?
Liberals hate the free market and want to dictate every aspect of our lives, and the minimum wage is just one example of that. Why don't liberals tell the truth and tell us how many small businesses will go under because of the boost in the minimum wage, and how many workers will be laid off because their companies can't afford to boost wages? Why won't they? Because it would expose their minimum wage nonsense for what it is... trying to get private businesses to pay out welfare...
It's arbitrary, and it ends up hurting a lot more people than it helps.

Man you are so misguided on this one DC. This is where real world experience comes into play. If you raise the minimum wage, then you have to raise the wage for skilled & techincal workers, which puts economic burden on small buisness owners like myself. Then I have to lay off people which doesn't benefit anyone or society. You want to make me pay an untrained, uneducated, laborer 8 bucks an hour. Currently the 3 to 4 bucks that you want Congress to increase goes to my trained, educated, skilled workers who have been with me for years. If I have to pay a nobody 8 bucks an hour then my skilled workers will have to scarfice by not getting the raises they deserve because of the Federal gov't. Mimimun wage is supposed to be a stepping stone to better life - not something to raise a family on. I haven't even mentioned that the wage increase would affect my material purchases and the cost for my buisness to provide services to the general public. The real question is where do you cap the minimun wage?

First off, I AM NOT A BUSH SUPPORTER.
Second, raising the minimum wage is NOT a solution to anything.
Raise the minimum wage, and the employer has to pay more.
The employer has to make more.
To make more, the prices have to go up higher.
The prices go higher, and the minimum wage earner has to spend more.
Spending more, means a higher sales tax.
So, go ahead and RAISE the minimum wage, the worker will end up with less money then before.
Sure... Good idea.

I don't think it has anything to do with Bush supporters. I asked a similar question, and each and every answer leaned toward keeping minimum wage the same. Most people believe that only 3% are earning minimum wage, but that is not the case. I just don't think people "get it".

Thats not entirely correct. Look at it from the other side, the business owner who employees minimum wage people. The business is doing ok, but now that the minimum wage goes up, he has to pay his employees more, so now he can't afford to have 5 employees anymore, so he is forced now to fire one to keep his business expenses low to stay in business. so in this case raising the minimum wage lost someone a job and hurt the economy and unemployment.

Maybe people should join the Military. At least they'll have a paycheck every month and won't need to worry about all this minim wage stuff. I know we Military families have received several raises since Bush has been in office.
