Keep as many evidences as possible to the abuse. Be calm and seek medical examination immediately. If there's a history to the abuse (like an earlier assault, or you're somewhat stalked by the same person) find a person whom you think could be a witness to it, or find all possible old evidences. Depending though on the level of assault you have inflicted in defense, if his bruises are worse than yours (like, for example, he passed out after hitting him with a hard object on his head... but then he's got more bruises than the one in the head), he'd use it against you and charge you with assault. Yeah, I guess.

I would have called the police and made a report when the incident happened, and gone to the hospital for treatment and documentation (They will now have it on record what injuries I had, how I acted and what I said.) Usually the police and hospital personnel are not idiots. They are used to the fact that the abuser lies.
If I hadn't done this at the time of the incident, I would do so right now.
Next, if the abuser is not in jail, I would get to a battered women's shelter or other safe place. I would get support wherever I could.
If I had lost touch with old friends and family for any reason (maybe they didn't like my husband or something) I would try to get back in touch with the ones that I thought would be helpful in this crisis.

I don't think anyone reading this thinks you are being hypothetical. The bleeding skull and bruises and abrasions speak loudly and clearly. The relative size of your body to his and his strength to yours would also speak loudly. If this is the case you are in get away from that man NOW, get to a woman's center for help and to the law for some legal aid.
You did not say what you defended yourself with or what kind of shape he is in. But this is definitely one for the courts and you need all the help you can get.

This isn't hypothetical at all - my ex-husband abused me and then tried to turn it around to get out of trouble. 1) The police take pictures and the wounds spoke for themselves 2) The police also assessed the threat posed by a 5'3" 109 lb woman against a 6'1" 250 lb man and didn't buy his story. Lesson learned? I pressed charges, was taken to a woman's shelter and initiated court proceedings for divorce and assault against him and won both. Take care, I hope this helps!

Make it a point to gather as much evidence as possible. Pics of injuries, hospital visit/s, character witnesses, previous police reports/arrests, anything at the scene of the crime. Immediately hire an attorney (I would suggest a female attorney, just because it seems that she would be able to relate to the situation in a way that a male probably could not.).
Hope I helped.

I would be thinking "that's what you get mother___". I would be proud of the fact I defended myself, and so well I might add, that I embarrassed him so much that he feels the need to charge me with assault. I would then mail him a binky, because he is a baby. Get the book by Gavin Debecker "The Gift of Fear", and read it.

I would have called the police when he attacked me. There would be an arrest and police report made. I would have photos of my injuries and copies of the medical reports to support this documentation.
With all of the evidence on side, he wouldn't have a snowball's chance in hell!

If I was defending myself from that level of abuse there would only be one side of the story. Abusers are a terrible waste of oxygen. `Nuff said.

I hope you would be smart enough to seek medical attention and to take photos of your injuries. That way, when you go to court for the charges, you can use self defense and have the proof to back it up.
And please.... leave him
