I live in Northern Wisconsin, not that it matters, but I have one back eyed susan and I would like many more. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Early next spring when the leaves just start forming, take a spade and dig out a small clump. Replant and fill in the hole where you dug it from. They are easily propagated by splitting and transplanting. Also if you leave the flower top on until they are compleatly dried, they contain seeds. This fall, cut a few of the heads and pull it apart for the seeds. Sprinkle in areas you want them, and they will germinate by spring. This process is a little slower, but it does work. I have black eyed Susan's all over from bird droppings.

You can divide it, but that does not help much if you truly have only "one".

You can let the flowers go to seed (seeds contained in brown or black head). The seeds will drop around and/or be carried away to other areas. Or you can try to spread the seed yourself.

I had a tiny black-eyed susan in 2003. One bloom. This summer the original patch covers about 8 square feet, plus I dug up pieces and planted them in 3 other spots, plus stray ones are popping up everywhere. I do have good soil for them (sandy).

I've never seen a back eyed susan but I have seen Black eyed susans! How you grew only one is a mystery to me. Wait till the one dies and save the seed and plant the seed next year.

You can plant more seeds or save the dead headed flowers and dry and plant them.

don't deadhead, just let them go and in 2 or 3 years you'll have more than you know what to do with.
