to have to go when you're nervous is actually pretty common. I'm not sure about the root beer thing...i know caffeine can "speed things along" or smoking cigarettes. I believe the nicotine relaxes you so you go and the caffeine is a stimulant which makes you go. There's no caffeine or nicotine in root beer, however so...
I would suggest (and I sound like an old person here),eating prunes. A prune or two a day really works wonders at preventing things from clogging up. You may think prunes are gross, but if you think of them as gigantic raisins you might be able to get into it...and they work without weird chemicals or anything...completely natural and work well. Don't eat too many, though, or you'll have the oppoiste problem. just some thoguhts fer ya.

Even though he was dewormed at 3 months old I would advise deworming him again and putting him back on Orijen (Orijen is the best food currently on the market and does not contain wheat). Safeguard dewormer which I buy at the local farm store has the broadest range of killing different types of worms and the one I would recommend. Its over a 3 day period and 3 weeks later you again use a dewormer over 3 more days and he should be set as far as removing and worms. Buy some fruitables pumpkin (can would be best) and mix that with his food, pumpkin is good for an upset stomach and can help to firm things up. Also when he eats mix water into his food so that it is easier to digest. The only other thing that I can think of is switching him to a completely raw diet which would include raw chicken as long as the chicken is raw he can eat it bones and all (never feed any animal cooked bones as once cooked they are drained of their natural moisture and are likely to splinter), while raw chicken or turkey will be the main food make sure to weekly mix in organs such as gizards, liver, heart, etc... so that he has a well balanced diet. His stools will be loose for maybe a week as it will be new to him but once he gets used to the new food you should find that his poops are substantially smaller and compact. The stool should also be fairly dry as your pup will not be needing to drink excessive amount of water associated with kibble, he will be getting a lot of water just from eating the raw meat which is 70-80% water. Raw feeding is also know as the BARF diet.

honey is that you my faithful husband posting this question?
I can't believe your going to ask people about you bowel movements - why didn't you ask everyone if it's normal to cup your hand around your butt so you can smell your farts close up?
you also didn't ask if it's unusual to sniff the baby's old diapers either!
come honey I know it's you so you can be honest here

You may have a nervous stomach. Sometimes when I eat something that did not agree with me, even slightly, it happens. It may be your system's way of relief from constipation.
