Both weapons ignited in the air.
Even the most primitive nuclear weapons do.
Its more destructive that way.
A ground "hit" digs out a crater, focusing the blast upward and reduces the bomb's impact by 30% or more.

Well, no one knew exactly what it would do, and the point of the bomb was to cause damage sufficient to stop the war, so yeah.
I'm not condoning it with the values of today, but the scientific world was working on this issue, a number of the scientists we had working on it had fled Germany, where they were trying to get it first, and the German war ended before the project was quite complete. There we were, fighting the Japanese, having been first attacked in peace time, and having a brand new, and very expensive bomb on our hands.
Are you saying the Japanese wouldn't have used it IN THE VALUES OF THAT TIME if they had come up with it?
The Germans were sure planning to use it, and I don't think the Japanese were any less eager to win the war.
That having been said, the destruction was horrible, the effects were long lasting, and it was a terrible thing to do to people. I hope it never happens to anyone else, anywhere.
To AstroFringe, below:
" The population of Hiroshima at the time was about 310,000, plus 40,000 military and 20,000 daytime workers from the suburbs for at total of about 370,000 people. The bomb was 10 feet long, 2'-4" in diameter, weighted 9,000 pounds, dropped from 31,600 feet and exploded at 2,000 feet with the force of 20K tons of TNT, the weight of the Enterprise"

An atomic bomb, and the hydrogen bomb, explode before hitting the ground. And yes, because of this their effect is more destructive.
