Some evidence to show that both Athena and Aphrodite descended from Inanna, the Sumerian goddess of love AND war. I once wrote a paper about that.
Then when the Romans came along they reduced the significance of Athena as goddess of war, substituting Mars instead.

Can't buy it. Aphrodite might fight battles, but she uses her words, wit and beauty. She woldn't be caught on a messy, bloody and ugly battlefield. Athena is a goddess of words and wisdom. I think, if you are going to pretend (in your own little world) that you are some sort of goddess, then you should pick an entirely different culture or pantheon. Ever tried the Celts?

Aphrodite is the goddess of beauty and sexual love. Athena is the goddess of wisdom and craft. Athena is the patroness of the intellectual, strategic aspects of war, while Ares/Mars rules the physical, violent aspects of war.
There were some ancient goddesses who ruled both love and war. Many believe that all the various Greek goddesses are fragmented aspects of one great Goddess of earlier times.

Mellixical is right. Zeus stole power from his adoptive mother, the great goddess and split her into a trinity of goddesses, therefore reducing her gratness. These goddesses are Hera, Aphrodite and Athena
