Does anyone have an arrangement that works for back to school time? Supplies and clothing at this time of year go so far over the usual budget - shouldn't the other parent have to kick in a bit towards it?

Yes, most defiantly! You are both parents ! And you both brought these children into the world. School, birthdays, and holidays
should be shared expense's! You should split the cost of taking
care of your children. It should be added to all divorce papers !
because it is an added expense. Not the normal expense of day to day living!

We too have no formal arrangement for this type of thing, or even for child support. We just both do whatever we can to make our kids as happy as possible given that we can't seem to do it together. I am so thankful that even though I have official custody of our kids, their dad puts them first in his life too. Maybe it is easier for us as neither of us has another partner and no other priorities as far as another family goes. Man, I'd hate to nit pick over crap like pens and pencils....like Merry said...too bad it even has to be a question! No offence to the asker, just too bad that the world is the way it is...

the non custodial parent who pays child support should not pitch in on anything !!! child support should cover living expenses including clothes, if the non custodial parent pays any extra money for living expenses including clothes ect. then the x wife or x husband has a legitimate excuse to increase child support! , the x's attorney would argue ,if the non custodial parent can afford to pay extra for clothes and extra living expenses , then he or she can afford a child support increase!, beware of this ,if your paying for extra items for your child , the x can be taking notes and building a case for court, so if your the non custodial parent who pays child support faithfully ,then don't pay extra for anything! or you could be back in court for an increase in payments, its sad that your kids have to face, not having all the luxuries of life you want them to have but child support laws need to be looked at and rewritten ,

Either way you are screwed. If the other parent does help its a "favor" but if they dont, then you are stuck with all the responsibility. It should be an unspoken rule that both parents are to do whatever they need to do inorder to make sure thier child has what they need to grow.

i think if you get child support then No, I dont think they need to help out with school supply. Child support pays for those kind of things too. I have a X, and he pays so.

my son just graduated. i paid for all school clothes, and supplies. some churches in my area donate items like backpacks so people who can't afford them are not without. i helped my son's mother beyond the support money often.

My ex does - we have 2 kids so I pay for one and he pays for the other. That way all the cost isn't on just one of us. It works out great. We also do that with yearbooks, school pictures, etc.

start thinking about your kids and not yourself. ask what your kid needs, and divide the list. this is your child, you need a reason or court order to go buy school clothes?
