at what age do you recomend putting a baby on solids

I recommend starting a baby on solids at 6 months old. Breast milk and/or formula provide all the nutrients a baby needs until then. Early introduction to solids has been linked to the high increase in food allergies. A baby has a tongue-thrust reflex that gradually subsides by 6 months. If this reflex is still strong, it will interfere in baby's ability to eat from a spoon. By 6 months, most babies also have good head control as well. A floppy head makes it difficult to make connection between spoon and mouth. Many parents, either on their own or with pediatrician's guidance, begin solids earlier. All babies are different and some are ready for solids early and some will go later than 6 months before willing to take anything but breast or bottle.

6 months! I read some of the answers that you have already received and 3 months is just too early. Some doctors say 4 months but that is only if your baby is ready and drinks plenty of breast milk or formula without any problems. My daughters doctor told me 4 months and it caused problems. First of all, she is a small baby and not a very big eater...Shes never really been very interested in the breast or formula, so I've always had to put her on a strict schedule to make sure she got the reccomended daily amount. When I started solids at 4months, she actually stopped gaining weight because she wasn't drinking as much breast milk. If you have this problem, then wait until at least 6 months. Breast milk and formula have much more fat and calories per serving then any other baby food. If your baby is an abundant eater...then go for it! Start with rice cereal, then fruits and veggies one at a time.

Here is a good site on how to cook and puree your own baby food. It is much healthier than the jarred. And the second will give you an idea on what a normal baby eats at different ages.

It's not me, it's the experts. Every health organization worldwide today recommends *no* solids, *no* water, *no* anything but human milk (or formula) until baby is 6 months old. If your pediatrician says it's okay to give solids earlier, then she/he is going against her/his professional organization and the best minds in the country and the world. I would suggest you ask what makes this doctor think she/he is smarter than people who have studied the question in real detail.

When you do start solids, fruits are usually the easiest for most babies. Babies are programmed to like sweet tastes (human milk is sweet). So give baby a chunk of banana or other soft fruit. If she/he takes a bite and wants more, then you know she/he is ready for solids.

I would not give your baby anything but breastmilk or formula before three months. The digestive track is the last system to develop and they simply cannot tolerate solid foods. Between 3-5 months, you can start adding a single grain cereal to your baby's bottle (enlarge the nipple opening a little) such as rice or oatmeal. Try one cereal for a week or two to be certain there are no adverse affects or allergic reactions. If your baby seems to be fussier or have an increase in gas pains, back off for a month or so to give his digestive system more time to develop. Between 5-6 months you can start adding baby foods. Some babies are ready for baby food earlier than others, depending on their appetite, or whether or not they were born at term. Premature babies may take longer to be ready for solid foods than babies who were born at term. Each baby is different, and will reach these milestones at different paces. Always check with your doctor before changing your baby's diet.

I work for a wic office and it's recommended that you should put your baby on solids at four months. You should start with carrot, peas stuff like that but for the first time just try one at a time to make sure that your baby it's allergie and to make sure that your baby is ready for solids and your baby should be able to hold up there head steady on there own first before you give them solids.

Baby cereal (rice cereal) on a spoon should be introduced at 4 months or so, and then stage 1 baby food at 5 months. Always check with the Pediatrician before any diet changes.

Always consult a professional if you think of starting before 3 months, babys organs cannot cope with solids before then. And always start with baby rice.

At 4 months start the cereal, at 6 months start the veggies and after that fruits, then you can start on the meats and dinners at like 10 months. After your child turns 1 then they can have table food.

not before three months, they are still developing their swallow reflex as well as gaining control over the gag reflex, before three months they will gag a lot on anything remotely solid
