During Japanese holidays the prices go way up.
For example during Golden week or around new years.
The cheapest time to go is probably around January, Feb, or March. It's also a good time to go if you dislike mushiatsui weather.

I guess it would depend where you are from to where you want to go. I am going to say, if you travel in the late fall/early winter, it would cost less. Any time on holidays (Christmas, New Years, Spring Break, summer, Thanksgiving), it would be considered high travel times.

Go onto the airline websites, do a price search and see what times are cheapest. You might be able to get a good deal if you go in low season and book your flight in advance of 6 months or more.

prices tend to drop here after Labor Day, the unofficial end to summer.
