If you aren't wearing any other accessories, your shoes should match the predominant color in your outfit, during the day, and can pick up an accent color in your outfit for evening glamour. If you're wearing other accessories, your shoe color should match your other accessories. For instance, don't wear a brown belt with black shoes.

What is going on here? Are you wearing a velvet evening skirt with a plaid flannel shirt, and aren't sure whether to wear satin pumps or hiking boots? If your top matches your skirt/pants, then how shoes match one and not the other? The shoes, like belt, bag, jewelry, and other accessories, should match the outfit as a whole.

They should somewhat match either the shirt or the pants, but the shoes can be a different shade of whatever color your wearing. Like a hot pink top with light pink shoes!

the original rule is that your shoes should match your hemline - that goes for pants or skirts. But choosing a complimentary color can also make a great statement and match just the same!

I usually wear matching (or at least same shade) top and shoes although sometimes, I just wear things that don't exactly match but go together well to avoid predictability.

I think it doesn't have to necessarily match to look good. But personally I like the shoes to match the bottom.
