Anyone got any recipes similar to pepper spray or mace that you can make at home using all legal, cheap, widely available ingredients?

Why not just use crushed pepper in vegetable oil? Get it in their eyes, and it will sting like crazy, but it is edible so can't be classed as a dangerous weapon, which the other suggested answers (acid, hairspray) will do. Use a hand-pump squirter, and you won't have to worry about any of those "It is a violation of Federal law to use this product in a manner inconsistent with its packaging" charges. Label it "salad dressing".

[Whiskey might also work, but it is flammable and you could be charged with a violation of the law under 'open container of alcoholic beverages in a public place.' ]

But why bother with chemical at all? Just get yourself a gun permit, and take lessons on how to use it. More and more states are allowing guns for home defense; search on the 'stand your ground' laws, and you will see what I mean.

Chemicals may 'deter' an intruder, but bullets will STOP him!

I would say that without the pressure of an aerosol can, your home made concoction is more likely to do more harm to you than any attacker, as it will stay in the air around you !! If you need something legal, any aerosol spray (hairspray, deoderant etc..) and a lighter will work just fine and are legal to carry on you.

get 2 garlic things and take all the cloves out now mash them all up boil some vinegar and put the garlic in stir for a while and then add salt keep stirring once salt dissolves chop some onion up add that to the gruesome concoction stir and then put the mixture into a squirt gun or spray thing try not to get the lumps in it or you will have less to spray. the good thing about this is it lasts ages before it goes of because of the vinegar.

Well - Mace is basically "Hot" pepper in kerosene or other mineral oil.. So if you want to make a copy - used dried scotch bonnet pepper seeds, ground up & mixed with oil & left for a while.. - You'll have to filter it afterwards though.

where do u live that and what do you do to think that this is a necessary accessory? Unless u are combat trained, the fright and shock of being attacked would push the thought of scrabbling to find a spray right out of your head - you would be too busy screaming and fighting to waste time to find a spray.

Mild acids like lemon juice in a spray would work, and probably wouldn't be illegal
