oh no don't pay anyone for anything... that's their job.
if they want cash well it's crap!
there are agencies all over, check them out thouroughly! no one should ask you to pay... extra's get paid.
there's laws you know! read all about it.
if you find a scam just get their business card or information don't say a word and call the BBB and movie agencies about this...
there's work out there to be had... unfortunately you're going to run into the jerks first.. go online to find out more about extra work and also about the bullcrap out there too... there should be indexes and agents listed all over.
call first! email first.. if you find a dud report it... it helps it really does.. because so many get screwed in so many ways.. not just they get lifted of their money but some carry it to far they take your money then they take advantage of you, watch out girls! boys have the trouble too, don't fall for a fraud.
good luck!

I'm a film student and I know a few people in there and stuff. I think the best way to do this is just know the right people really. I'm sure, as the other answers have said, there are agencies that do this. I doubt you'd need an agent.

I do Craft Services and a lot of the extras I've met have registered at casting or "extras" agencies. Don't pay any agency a fee! Search the net and you will find places where you can register. Good luck.

Most likely, as agencies that cast people for different roles will take a pecentage instead of charge a fee. Besides for some I think they are advertised locally, as they aren't creditted and usually aren't paid.

Knowing someone is important, I got work as an AD because I knew someone who was looking for one.
Just keep an eye out locally and for big production shooting locations.
The places where they are likely to need extras are big outdoor shoots

If you live in Yorkshire then you could be an extra for Nobody Films in their forthcoming sci-fi production Traveller.

Yes. Your best bet is to get to know a casting director.
