In the movie - Skip dies of old age. I haven't read the book, but I do not believe that Skip was shot. Not sure what version of My Dog Skip you saw but Willie doesn't shoot him.

Oh well, I didn't see that movie... so I'm guessing rabies as well.
Same thing with Cujo.
Looks like dog movies have bad endings. Except for Beethoven, and Todo on Wizard of Oz.
