go with what brdkncd said. the thunderbird had some problems with the 1-2 and 2-3 accumulator piston seals leaking. but it sounds like you do have an electrical fault causing a code to be set and by you turning your switch off and back on resets the computer until it detects a fault again. I'd have it checked by a professional.

Depending on when your car was put in service it either has an Aode or a 4r70w Transmission Either way they are Almost Identical Ok now on to the problem a little more info would be helpful how many miles? When you say shifting wrong do you mean its slipping, not shifting into 3rd etc these tranys are really reliable but they do have there problems 1-2 accumulator should be upgraded to the new bonded rubber one the 2-3 accumulator has a problem with the spring breaking. It could be a number of things these are just the problem childs in this tranny. If you take it to a trany shop be prepared about 95% will just drive it and tell you it needs a rebuild which could be true but I think they could do a little more diagnostic work and save people some money. For example my moms expedition was shifting strange would not go into 3rd. she took it to a shop and they told her it needed to be rebuilt I told her to bring it to me and I took the valve body off and guess what the 2-3 accumulator spring was broke $2.00 for the spring $7.00 for the gaskets $5.00 for the filter and about 30.00 for fluid and it runs like a champ. Also if you have never changed the fluid and filter that would be a good start.

my mom has a jeep and it does that all the time...you pull over and stop to take the keys out(turn the car off) then count to any number and then it should be right
