Insulting the intelligence of others makes small-minded people feel good about themselves for some reason.
Although, there is a spell check feature.

No, I have an opinion and I want to get it across to others that are asking questions properly. If you, or anyone else, is intelligent enough to ask question then why can't the answers be just as intelligent? I went to school for 13 years (No, I didn't fail anything, kindergarten + 1st-12th grades) and I would like to think that I learned something.
Now, I have a question for you. If you are asking why people are so hung up on spelling, then why wouldn't you make sure that you are seeming intelligent as well? Didn't you learn that the first letter of a question and/or sentence is capitalized?

I don't think it's such a huge hang up, I more think good spelling and grammer are a sign of respect. After all, you are asking people to help you, they don't want to have to try and work out what you're saying first. But I agree some people do get quite stressed about it, and I assume these people are older, and scholars.

Perhaps because it is difficult to give a reasonable response to a badly constructed question? If you want a question answered then the least you can do is make an effort to present the question properly. I understand that some people genuinely cannot spell, and thats a different matter, but when people are simply too lazy and arrogant to take time over their spelling then it just becomes annoying.
I have an opinion, so shoot me.

I don't think I would mind as much if there wasn't a "Check Spelling" feature attached to Answers. Its right there and takes 10 seconds. Some questions are so marred with spelling and grammatical errors that I don't understand them. Its a reflection of the state of society and our educational system. We should try to enforce proper grammar at any point. It sounds like nagging, but helpful in the long run.

Well, besides the fact that sometimes the spelling and grammar are so bad it is hard to read the question, it is also just annoying. Part of it is because there are so many 12 and 13 year olds on here, but also it is just frustrating to see that so many people can't spell!

Because it's really distracting. Yahoo gave us spell check for a reason. There is a big difference between U and you. Illiteracy is not cool. This is why no one has faith in the American education system anymore. No matter how good a question is, no one can take something serious if it's written like a five year old typed it. And mostly, it's just annoying.

Nope. To be honest, spelling used to be really important. If its not written well, its not a piece of English. You had to learn spelling, punctuation and grammar just as you learn your tables in maths or even chemical symbols. I would suggest that people who get annoyed with reading very bad spelling (there's a lot of that here..may be annoyed as it just looks as though no effort has been made.
If you applied for a job with a low standard of spelling and grammar I doubt you'd get an interview. I hope I haven't offended you in any way but it's just the way that people think who originally made - or had to make - the effort...

Because poor spelling often makes the question appear stupid, and can make the question completely different to the one the person wished to ask in the first place. The fact that there is a spell checker available means that there should be no wrongly spelt answers

Having pride in your spelling and grammar is one thing, putting others down for having lower standards than yourself is something very different.
I also dislike bad spelling, but unlike some, I do not feel the need to make myself look superior by putting others down.
They wouldn't criticise someone in the street for poor pronunciation, but when they are safely hidden behind a PC they can be all brave and clever.
Get a life people!!
