although i have not counted them myself you understand, wiki assures us that little babies are born with around 270 on average and by the time you're adult this goes down to around 206 on account of some fusing together. but of course if you're a cannibal and have just had a good lunch the number of human bones in your body could be substantially larger . . .

Anatomists have been arguing this for years, depending on things such as counting the skull as one or made up of it's component parts Another question that is argued about is are the sesamoid bones counted ? These are very small bones usually found at the base of the thumbs and under the big toes. The purpose of these is to change the direction of pull of tendons. Although I think the first answer is probably the most accepted one.
