The television show The Simpsons is set in a town generically named "Springfield", without indicating a state. Creator Matt Groening has indicated in interviews that he chose the name because of its ubiquity, and various attempts by fans to correlate the fictional Springfield to a real one have not been resolved.

The Simpsons live at 742 Evergreen Terrace in Springfield, USA. What state? Nobody knows, not even the people that make the show. It has been revealed on Behind The Laughter that they were from Kentucky but this was changed in its second airing. The writers continue to tease viewers with clues, but Matt Groening has said himself that there is no actual location for Springfield. He chose the name as most places have a 'Springfield'. If you're still not convinced, visit www.snpp.com, as they can explain a lot more than I can. If this isn't good enough, you can stick with Kentucky if you want. A map in 'Brake My Wife, Please' marked Springfield in a similar area.

The short answer is that Springfield does not exist. It doesn't have a real state, and the fact that it has no state is nothing more than a running gag. Springfield is more like "Anytown, USA". It's as if all of America was compressed into a single town, or a single state. Springfield is everywhere and nowhere.....

The actual answer is in Kentucky. There are perhaps three episodes that allude to this fact.

Plus, it was plainly admitted in the episode "Behind the Laughter". Look it up if you don't believe me.

EDIT: Just so you know, there is *not* a Springfield in every state (or even in the lower 48), that's just misinformation. Almost every state has one, though.

It wasnt Illinois or Missouri. The producers of that show keep it a secret, but springfield isnt in any state. It basically represents suburbian America. In one episode they have a map and they live 2000 miles away from Chicago so it isnt in any state.

ANYSTATE, USA

The thing is that there is a "Springfield" in EVERY one of the 48 continental United States. That's why Matt used it.

I think it's supposed to be like a joke -
one episode they were playing on it
like they would be about to point it out on a map and somebody would walk in front of the map
