It depends on how successful the film was. The less successful the quicker the movie comes out on DVD because they are trying to capitalize on the initial publicity to capture those people who will wait and then just buy the film because it's cheaper than taking the whole family to see a movie in the theater. The more successful movie will take longer and often will be tied up with something else, like the LOTR movies were released just a few weeks before the next film.

I have saved about 8 movie tickets and timed how long it took. Almost every one came out 4 months later to the date. Its weird. sometimes though it takes longer. My average is 4 months.
