not a female nor a doctor (yet), but i know the answer to this one.

DON't let her do it.

tampons can be damaging and have even caused sepsis on some women due to the foreign chemicals that are contained in them.

women should only wear tampons on very heavy days, but never several days in a row.

also, since she is so young, she should just wear pads. much healthier for her.

I've been using tampons since shortly after I got my period when I was younger. I'm 36 now, and no problems, just follow the instructions in the package. I've always had heavy flow, so for the first couple of days, I actually use both (tampon and pads, especially overnight).

It is NOT true that you need to change them every 2 hours.

They are as safe as pads if used correctly and changed every 6-8 hours....or sooner if needed.

It is good for a woman's system to have some times that they are not wearing tampons; so when your flow lightens up and leakage isn't a worry anymore, I reccommend sleeping with only a pad. I usually only wear tampons when I'm going somewhere and wear pads at home. A box of each will usually last me two months that way.

A woman should use the absorbancy UNDER the flow she actually has---therefore, a woman with a moderately heavy flow should actually use regular or supers, NOT super plus.

It's a good idea to use two separate sizes during a period since the flow goes from heavy to light---for example, use super or super plus for the first couple of days and regular for the rest.

Tell her that panty liners are a good investment too because a tampon can go from dry to soaked quickly sometimes; same as pads can.

I dont suggest tampons at night just for the reason that most tampons have a limit of time they put on wearing them. The box will say to only have it in for 6-8 hours or something like that. If the person is going to sleep longer than that than there is a physical danger. If you have it in to long without changing it, there is a possibility of your system going into shock or getting an infection from the body becoming toxic.
Just have her do pads at night and tampons during the day when they can actually be changed.

It's good that your niece and you have such a close relationship where this topic is easily discussed. Sometimes the feminine protection products that work best for aunt may not work best for the niece. She is in her late teens so surely she can experiment using tampons at night during her period, after all they are more comfortable.

If tampons can be confidently worn while swimming, showering and bathing while on a period, surely sleeping with one is hardly a problem...at least do a trial run. Just put one in right before bedtime and take it out when she wakes up, and don't oversleep.

There is nothing wrong with this. I used tampons for my FIRST period (I was kid on my way to the beach and that was the only solution). I wouldn't recommend it for night use though. If she is determined to use them at night, make sure she uses it right before bed and takes it out first thing in the morning. Also make sure that she is using the correct size (light, regular, super...) Using more absorbency than necessary can lead to TSS (toxic shock syndrome). If she decides to use them during the day also, make sure she knows to change every 3-4 hours even if it doesn't feel like it's time. And it's always a good idea to wear pantyliners just in case. Read the insert in the package, it contains a lot of information to educate you.

Hope this helps...

The package directions say that you should not wear them for more than eight hours, so if she sleeps longer, then she should probably use a pad. i use tampons at night when my flow isn't heavy. I worry about leaks when I am sleeping, so i prefer pads.

I have never gotten sick from a tampon, and European women have been using them overnight for decades. I think that overnight use in the US is a new thing because the manufacturers don't want to get sued over more cases of Toxic Shock Syndrome.

She is better off sticking to pads during the night.
Over flow is a big problem at night though.
Our family has a tradition... when a girl gets her first period... the child is provided a gift of womenhood....

This gift is what we call a nature blanket.. (generally a cotton patchwork quilt) It is used to cover the mattress during your period.

I don't have medical backing to say it is bad to wear tampons at night, but I was raised to believe it is best not to because of possible bacteria build up. You generally sleep 8 plus hours a night. tampons should be changed every 1-2 hours depending on flow. There are warnings on the boxes about leaving them in too long.

The inserts inside the tampon box are perfect sources of information. You might even be able to get some good advice from their websites, etc.
I have been using them for a long time and have had no issues whatsoever. They will not cause her to lose her virginity, they are safe as long as you change them regularly. Using one over night is just fine. Put it in before bed and take it out first thing in the morning. If her flow is heavy she should try the 'super' size.
HTH!

I use tampons at night, I cant stand to use pads for anything.
Make sure she reads the box & the insert about TSS. (Toxic Shock Syndrom is VERY rare, by the way, but she should still have that information)
Next she should buy the absorbancy that will last her through the night - super if her periods are heavy, regular or junior if they are not.
She should change the tampon when she first gets up in the morning.

Thats about it, its pretty simple.

I've used tampons at night for years. I just make sure I put one in right before bed and then take it out immediately after I get up. I haven't had any problems. Tampons should be changed every 4-6 hours not every couple of hours.
