Santa Claus, Saint Nicholas, Saint Nick, Father Christmas, Kris Kringle, Santy, or simply Santa is a fictional giving figure in various cultures who distributes presents to children, traditionally on Christmas Eve. Each name is a variation of Saint Nicholas, but refers to the Santa Claus character. The popular American form Santa Claus originated as a mispronounciation of Dutch Sinterklaas, which is a contracted form of Sint Nicolaas (Saint Nicholas).

Father Christmas is a well-loved figure in many countries and predates the "Santa Claus" character. Many little children are led to believe that Santa Claus is real.

Santa Claus comes from the Dutch word Sinterklaas which comes from Sint Nicolaas. Sint Nicolaas translated is Saint Nicolas. Saint Nicolas was a bishop from Myra. From the thirteenth century on people in the west started to celebrate his name-day. They used to do that by giving something to the poor (children). Stories of Saint Nicolas have been confused with stories of his nephew yet another Nicolas who was known for saving children. In (among other countries) Holland we celebrate his name-day and the day before by buying gifts for everyone and add a small poem to each gift. In the days before the celebration ( fifth or sixth of December) children are allowed to put their shoe in front of the fireplace and some candy or a small toy will be put in to the shoe. This is of course done by the parents, but the children are told it's done by Sinterklaas and his helpers. It is said that Sinterklaas ride a on a white horse on the rooftops and delivers his presents through the chimney. So, Santa Claus or Sinterklaas is more or less based upon a real person (persons).

Santa Claus is a variation of a European folk tale based on the historical figure Saint Nicholas, a bishop from the region that is now present-day Turkey, who gave presents to the poor.

This inspired the mythical figure of Sinterklaas, the subject of a major celebration in the Netherlands and Belgium, Germany (where his alleged date of death, December 6, is celebrated the evening before on December 5), which in turn inspired both the myth and the name of Santa Claus (actually a mispronunciation of the Dutch word "Sinterklaas" by the English settlers of New New York (New Amsterdam at the time), in those countries Saint Nicholas is celebrated as a distinct character with a religious touch, Santa Claus is also celebrated on Christmas eve.

Santa Claus as we know him is fiction, but his spirit of giving was based upon fact. Based upon some one who shared with those who did not and made childern smile with his gifts.

so i say he was real and his spirit is still real today, and with those of us who believe.
