There are many misconceptions about the term Aether. Its existence is neither proven nor disproven. The famous Michelson-Morley experiment had only shown that the absolute Maxwell Aether that exists in addition to the ponderable matter, is a wrong concept. It was Einstein who pointed out that it is necessary to rethink the aether, to give a physical interpretation for our completely geometrical theories. It has taken a century to figure out how.

Additional Details -----------------

Michelson and Morley 'were' scientists, thus they didn't 'try to prove' the existence of an aether. They tried to measure an effect that would be measurable if the assumption of an absolute resting medium besides matter was correct. The experiment had and has a negative result within the accuracy of measurement.

No prominent physicist I know has tried to prove the existence of the aether.
