I think they intentionally pick out dysfunctional people to be on the shows (and sometimes throw in a more well-adjusted one in there for grins). Then they consider how the dysfunctions might play off each other for maximum entertainment value.

Reality TV not only brings out the worst in people, it brings out the worst in TV itself. These shows are made so much because the TV networks don't have to pay actors to be in the show. The show's simple, repetitive plots also are annoying. Their are 3 types of reality shows: The teamwork show, the contest show, and the very young people living together in one place doing things I can't imagine ever doing on TV show. The original Teamwork show(and the very first reality show) was Survivor. This show has been copied by other TV executives many times, with shows such as the amazing race and Endueance. The original contest show, and most popular reality show, was American Idol. Due to this shows popularity, the contest show is the most widely duplicated genre of reality shows: America's Got Talent, Dancing with the Stars, So You Think You Can Dance?, Last Comic Standing, and Rock Star Supernove just name a few. The third type of show, the living together show, was orignally Big Brother or The Osbournes. That shows been duplicated by shows such as Real World and that show about the people trapped underground and the only way they can get above ground is they have to decide which one of them gets 1 million dollars(I can't remember the title, it aired this past spring. What America dosen't notice is that they are really watching the same three TV shows over and over again, just on different networks. I hope that people will start noticing this more so we get good, entertaining quality Television shows. Thankfully, reality TV appears to be dying out

Yes, because reality isn't something we can control not even wen we see something we will like to keep, plus in T.V., how real can that be, if the only purposes of such programs are to pursue and exploit the best in each and all of us, to express our animal behaviors, greed, powers and potential we can exercise and use against someone else, just for money a/o popularity, or for a better place within a corrupted, ignorant and imperfect Society?

Of course it does...because since the advent of these shows, they've learned that the most outrageous behavior is what grabs air-time, and thus, their chances of not being booted off increase.
That's why I've never watched any of them; they're not reality if they're populated by a bunch of celebrity wanna-bes who have agents and are auditioning for everything they can try out for.
Every reality-TV contestant eventually hires an agent and tries to make a show biz career off of it.

Reality TV, like every other form of entertainment, gives the audience what they are looking for. When something gets ratings the networks give us more of that. So reality TV doesn't bring out the worst - the viewing audience demands the worst out of people.

Without a doubt yumyum! Unfortunately it brings out the best in ratings at rock bottom cost so we have to get used to it.

I couldn't agree more. It's detrimental to society, as well as to entertainment. It's garbage.
