ERA stands for earned run average, probably the most important stat in measuring a pitcher's effectiveness. You calculate ERA by taking the number of earned runs a pitcher has allowed and multiply it by nine. Then take that number and divide it by the number of innings pitched. For example if a pitcher has allowed 5 earned runs over 20 innings: 5X9=45 45/20= 2.25 ERA

ERA stands for Earned Run Average. It represents the average number of earned runs a pitcher allows per 9 innings pitched. It is calculated by the following formula:
9 * (Earned Runs / Innings Pitched) = ERA
ERA does not include unearned runs, which are runs that are scored as a result of a fielding error by a fielder (which can include the pitcher) or a passed ball by the catcher.

It is Earned Run Average. Take the earned runs given up, multiply that by 9 (innings in a standard game) and divide that # by the number of innings a pitcher has pitched.
