I have times where I get extremely sad and upset. Sometimes it coincides with my cycle, sometimes it doesn't. I'm currently taking Loestrin birth control.
My boyfriend and I are currently in a long distance relationship. This hasn't helped these mood swings. Sometimes I get so upset he can't even talk to me and that only makes me feel worse. After the fact I realize what's going on, but during it I can't make the bad feelings go away. I feel like it's tearing me apart.
How do I know if this is just normal stress or if there's really something wrong. I'm afraid to go to a doctor because I don't want to just be put on meds without them thoroughly trying to find out what's wrong.

Psychologists do not dispense medication- they are sometimes referred to as 'talking doctors'. You don't need to know the label or name for your irritability- if you don't feel good, you don't feel good. It doesn't have to be a disaster for you to talk to a psychologist. If you can't afford that, talk to a trusted, unbiased adult like a really nice teacher who is good at listening.

A psychiatrist would not put you on medication without asking you important questions to see if your emotions are tied to a clinical depression, a personality disorder, your cycle, your current circumstances, or a combination of these issues.

It's difficult to know without consulting your doctor. If you don't want to be put on medication right away, you won't be forced to. It's best to see your doctor and tell him everything you've been feeling. If you're unhappy with his response, see another doctor. Hope you feel better!
