It's an elf or a fairy in the context of literature and tales. Commonly confused with a spirit. Other classifications for it's use are: pixie, imp, brownie, puck, peri, leprechaun; nymph, sylph and naiad.
If we could move our avatars around that/they would be a sprite. Usually used with a computer graphic that is manipulated.
Also used to indicate a little flash in the upper atmosphere when there is a thunderstorm.
