Why are Americans so over the top in everything they say, i mean look at american chat shows everyone screaming and shouting in that ridiculous accent. PLEASE LEARN TO SPEAK ENGLISH THE WAY ITS MEANT TO BE SPOKEN OR DONT SPEAK AT ALL

No one has ever said my accent was annoying. I think it is rude to generalize about a whole country.

I sense a tinge of hypocrisy in your question, as you put the last sentence in all capital letters.

Did it ever occur to you that the Queen's English can be annoying to Americans?

Second, there are MANY different american accents, depending on background. Theres Urban, with or without ebonics, spoken by a majority of African Americans. Then theres a southern accent, which would be the theme of many redneck jokes. Then theres the New York accent, which is gawdy and rude, then the rest of us speak roughly a normal english, with few variations, like the new jersey accent.

and what about Canadian english? thats pretty messed up to say the least. or Austrailian. There are so many variations of the english language, and even more in America, so dont make broad generalizations in th future without being specific.

If you are looking at those stupid "talk" shows to tell you what true Americans are, you are barking up the wrong tree, bucko. You are listening to the true Rednecks, NOT the run-of-the-mill American. Every society has their "lunatic fringe", and those people are ours. Those talk shows are their "15 minutes of fame". It's probably all they are ever going to get, and they want to make sure everybody sees them on it, showing their ignorance. Most Americans are highly educated and speak with a level tone in an intelligent manner, and don't "air their dirty laundry" in public.

Considering that the people who settled America CAME from England, it's natural we would bring English with us. Every society takes a language and makes it their own......not everybody is meant to speak the "Kings English".

As far as "accents" are concerned, they are ALL different. Not everybody can, or wants to sound Brit. Although I love the way a British accent sounds I don't want to emulate it. While I do have a thick(ish) Texas accent, it is neither "high" nor "whiney". I'm proud of it because it points to my heritage.

As you can see by the looks of things, you might able to find out a thing about how the American people talk really annoyingly. Some Americans talk in the most annoying accent of all, the Southern accent, that's the most annoying accent of them all as compared to other accents such as the New England accent, the Brooklyn accent, the Harvard accent, the Afro-American accent, and even the most common accent of them all, the Standard Midwestern accent which is the most common accent by far. If only there's a way to encourage all Americans to talk in a British accent so that the British won't think that they are annoying, just by speaking it, of course. lol

well peter f, I'm an American and i don't talk with a high pitched wine. if u think we say things pathetic and our English isn't up 2 ur standards, then u should go back 2 Britain where u belong. the way we talk isn't the best but there's a time and place for everything. if we're not @ work and we're chilling with our friends and family, it's time for us to relax and be ourselves. since you're such an xpert in how to speak proper English, maybe you should give a class on how to speak the English language properly!

You might keep in mind there are at least four major American dialects of English, none of which sound much like the others. And there are several dialects in Britain too, so which one exactly is the "right" one, do you think? I agree that some accents/dialects are more pleasing to the ear than others, but as long as we all understand each other I don't think it's a serious problem.

English is a languages used in many countries, and like any other language its evolution is different in each country. Even in UK the accent is not the same in Scotland or in Enlgand for example.

It's the same thing with French : It's not the same way to speak French in France, Canada, Swiss, Belgium... Even in France some words and the accent are different between the North and the south.

Considering that languages are pretty much artificial constructions, there really are not "correct" or "incorrect" pronunciations. It's just a matter of what the norm in the society is...in other words, majority rules.

The plurality of the English-speaking world has an American "accent." So, unfortunately, you are the one who needs to change if you want to speak the language properly.

The only Americans I'm aware of who speak with a "whiney" accent are people from the Northeast (New England states).

We're going to speak English regardless. Would you rather we speak Cockney (maybe to sound a bit more like you)? THAT is annoying. Those people are just trashy. Ugh.

Peter, to be honest with you, it depends on where the person is from in America that can determine their way of speech.

For example, people from the southern United States, tend to speak with a bit of a twang or a drawl. Very slowly, very deliberate way of speaking.

People from the eastern seaboard of the United States, tend to speak with a brash, straight-forwardness.

People from the western United States, tend to speak with a bit of arrogance about them.

People from the New England region speak with their own dialect that is truly their own.

So, when you say that American speech is annoying, which dialect is it that you find annoying?

And since you wish for everyone to speak English ". . . the way its meant to be spoken . . .", what are your feelings toward Australians who speak English?

Why would they want to speak English they are American, they probably think we speak pathetically,

I think some of the accents in England are horrible, I wont mention which ones dont want to upset anyone, but that includes my own accent.
