Geologist are looking for other oil deposit.
Physicists and engineers are looking for ways of making cars more fuel efficient.
Inventors are looking at ways to make cars less dependent on traditional oil (like using electricity, or hydrogen, or some other type of power source).
Chemists are looking at way of producing fuel from alternate sources (like biomass; or even garbage, look at the link below)
Now, let me ask you: what have YOU done?

Actually, "science" is doing nothing. Scientists are however working on various energy substitutes. If our species is going to survive long term, we need an energy way beyond what is strapping our economy. We need alternatives for our depleted sources. This includes our depleted soil if we go with bio fuels. So far the best shot we have is nuclear. Of course that creates its own problems with waste. However, as has been pointed out: more people have died in the back seat of Ted Kennedy's car than have died in the American nuclear power plants.

Even though it is impossible to replace oil and associated products and any potential replacement will take a while to substitute our oil dependent economy, there are some points of light. Biodiesel and ethanol is probably the most important step to decrease our dependency on foreign oil. Biodiesel is a mixture between diesel oil and methyl esthers from different sources but mainly soybeans that will be replacing diesel in a near future. E85 or a mixture between ethanol from corn and gasoline (15%/85%) will be replacing gasoline accordingly. You have to realize that as those technologies move forward, legislation has to be doing its work accordingly in order to widen their use.
