if that answer is not liked by the asker. Do you think this is an obvious response from the asker or do you think that we should all be more open to criticism and consider giving points even though the answer possibly hurts but it is telling the person something that they may not like to hear?

This question is a purely hypothetical one?

No point scoring is certainly not an important issue with me, however, I would like to think that my opinions, help, and advice would strike a cord with someone

The Best Answer for me would be if I am able to answer a question to best of my capabilities and have learnt something new in the process my self.

So it is a winner for me anyways, and if the reader likes it too, then it is like a bonus!

I think everyone is different. I've noticed that a lot of best answers include the phrase "good question!" so a bit of flattery obviously helps!!

For me, I choose the answer that seems to get to the heart of things, whether it is complimentary or not!#

I choose as best answers the ones that seem to have some thought put in to them. I hate it when people just paste in a long answer from the internet.

I guess that in posting the question, a person is taking a risk....and the Y A community are a mixed bunch!

Good question, by the way!!

It depends on the criticism, and if it is actually constructive. There are quite a few sarcastic and down right rude people on here. ALthough I dont know the nature of your answers, as long as you are open and honest and not out to cause offence, I dont see why honesty isnt the best policy.

But does the best answer and point scoring thing really matter?

If the asker is religious he/she mostly will not be open minded to accept critic answers. In my view, what is important is to answer them expressing our opinion. Let them like it or reject it. But there are readers too. Getting selected as best answer should not be our aim. Sharing the thoughts and knowledge, that is important.

I disagree.
I think that some questions are....how do you say...
unanswerable.
Thus, you get some that have no best answer.
I think it all depends on the question, how it's worded, and who answers it.
There are lots of good questions but few good answers.
That's my final answer and no, I don't want to use the fifty-fifty, poll the audience, or phone a friend.
Good luck!!
Peace, joy, love.

the response i give will not be the obvious response you are looking for i feel i need to critise they way you asked the question and this may hurt but try to be more open and you need to give me the points even though you dont want to hear it.

We should definately be open to constructive critism. If you ask a question you are going to get loads of different answers coz everyones opinions are different. xxxx

I have awarded plenty people best answer while they were somehow verbally abusing me.
As long as they abuse verbally me in a funny way, I don't care.
