Criminal background checks in the workplace is a double edge sword. The up swing to doing these is the obvious, to weed out habitual criminals that may harm other employees or ones that may help themselves to the goods of the office or company...however, the Enron, Texaco, and Arthur Anderson, executives did worst than any career criminal I have ever heard of as far as theft is concerned.

The flip sides is, when you have individuals that may have screwed up in the past (Like most of us, but we just didn't get caught) some would like to return as productive members of society to only find out they have not quite finish their time. They are pre-judged on past offenses (some small-non violent or non-theft) they seem to do time in jail and when they get out. And this same society tells these individuals "to get a job".....but not here!

Too many people are stealing and murdering fellow employees. Doing background checks show patterns of behavior. This gives the employer a chance to decide if they think this person would be appropriate for their business. Background checks are not infallible, but are another tool in making the decision.

Well, with background checks you can find out who is a criminal, because face it a lot of people lie on their resumes and on the applications.

You can ensure you are not hiring a drunk or a druggie, it also allows you to see potential problems you may have with the employee.

Well, being a teacher, I don't want Joe-Schmo the pedophile working as a teacher, and I don't want the psycho stalker chick working next door to me either. So, I guess what it does is hopefully start to weed out some of the crazy, less reliable people.
