Ruggles Mine in Grafton NH. You can find beryl and tourmaline there. Ruggles Mine is open to the public for a fee (I think it is $20 per person)

You can also find those same minerals at Beryl Hill, in Royalston MA, just south of NH. (Contact the owner, Chet Hall, at 978/ 249-2183) for permission.

A little further away, is Herkimer NY, home of the famous Herkimer diamonds (which are not actually diamonds, just nicely-shaped pieces of quartz.) There are several mines, and once more you pay a fee and watch a safety film before doing any digging.

There are numerous places to find garnets in the Connecticut.River valley. Try contacting gem and mineral clubs to find more locations. Good luck and have fun!
