the proper way to fix cracks in plaster walls is to v out the crack then you can use fixall dry wall mud plaster in the v and then you apply the fish net type tape so that its more durable and gives more than reguler drywall tape and then you match exsiting texture or finish that is present

First get a good bottle of Scotch. Crack that bastard open and start chugging. If you cant chug the scotch then you need to stop being a pansy. Just open up your gullet and let that booze flow down your pipe. Once this chore is finished then you can move onto the next step. Put some damn putty in the crack and your done. Then drink more scotch.

first you buy a fiberglass tape and plaster. then you go home
cut a piece of fiberglass tape stick it where the crack is then you
cover it with plaster do not try to completly cover the tape in the first coat of plaster wait for it to dry then sand the edges and put another coat of plaster then wait for it to dry sand it and it'll be ready to paint.

Get some hardwall/plaster and put a little PVA glue in it. The glue's not really needed but if some's handy then stick it in.

A crack in the wall like that needs to be fixed with fiberglass joint tape in addition to joint compound. The fiberglass provides the structural support to keep the crack from spreading apart.
