Any ideas as to what I could make out of old cedar planks as a gift?

If the planks aren't treated, and they're relatively thin, you can soak them in water and bake fish on top of them to make the fish taste REALLY good!

So really all you'd need to do is maybe carve some real simple design into them to indicate that they're for fish-baking, and they're good to give as is! =)

Cedar is a versitile wood. Its weather-resistant properties combine with a range of rich colors and an aroma that pleases people but repels moths and other insects.

Depending on the size of your planks and how much work you want to put into them, cedar can be used for a number of things, including cutouts for scenting closets, carving simple or stylized figures -- it's a soft, porous wood so it does not take fine detail well -- making cedar boxes and other containers, and making wooden toys. Weathered pieces can be used as rustic plaques and bases for artwork.

Of course, if the cedar is not treated for fire resistance, it makes fantastic kindling/firestarter wood, and it smells wonderful when it burns. Cedar sawdust is also a great base for handmade incense for the same reason.

Hi, Depending on the size of the planks, and your knowledge with woodworking, you might try a treasure box, jewelry box, or go to Home Depot, Michael's, or Martha Stewart.

I made some really nice flower planters and a corner bench on my deck.
They are B-E-A-U-TIFUL!
We even had some left over so we made a matching stand for our hose reel box.
