animalmother is correct... they run around and squirt blood. You're not suppose to do that as some of the blood will drain into the body cavity. Possibly causing a different taste to the meat or bacteria laiden meat.

If you decapitate anything, it will continue to move around a bit even though it is already dead. It's a function of the central nervous system that causes this. Have you ever chopped the head off of a snake? It curls itself up then uncurls and continues to do this for a good 30 seconds. A chicken does have the ability to run around headless, but it is not because it is still alive that it does this. Usually when a chicken has its head cut off, it will lie on the ground and twitch around alot.

As a kid my grandmother raised her own chickens for eggs and eating. She would either kill them by ringing their necks (a feat that I recently saw as a competition on a cable sports channel) or chop their head off. I watched this for a better part of my childhood and Earl is right...................they flop, flop, flop all around; and mark185 is right, its a response from the nervous system. It's not a sight I would want any of my grandchildren today to witness more or less see on tv.

Yes they do for about 2 hours and by the end of two hours it's more like a flopping around on the ground instead of running.

i'm sorry to say that, certain, a hen can flop round after that's head is bumped off. at the same time as i replaced right into a baby I occurred upon my mom and a nighhbor woman doing in a hen and witnessed the aftermath. no longer particularly both, may I allow you to recognize!! certain, a hen will run round a lengthy time period after that's head is chopped off.

Yes, they do. It is a nervous impulse. There was this one guy on David Letterman who had a headless chicken that lived for a year and a half. Check out the link below, it even has a picture of him. His name was MIKE THE HEADLESS CHICKEN

They jump and flop about, yes blood spurting everywhere. It is just their nerves. Funny to watch though. Seen lots do it. Had chickens growing up.
