Monitor could be going bad. Settings on your video card could be off with brighness set too low. Video card could also be going bad.

Was it ever lighter? If so then your backlight is probably going out you can replace this if you have decent technical abilities, but it can be tricky depending on your monitor style. If it never was brighter than it is just how the monitor ships always check the brightness rating before buying a monitor. It could also be software related as the others have suggested.

It could be the monitor or your video card, borrow someones monitor before purchasing a new one. If it's still dark, you will need a video card.

There is nothing on the computer end that will make your monitor look brighter. Throw it away and get a new one.

if i were u,
i will goto display properties then advanced and play with settings over there and see if it helps.
if not ill borrow a monitor and plug it into the computer and see if it works.
if everything fails, it is the video adapter which has to be changed
