Wasps are not evil -- they have no concept of morality, so "good" and "evil" are outside the scope of their experience. However, we can say they are "good" in the sense that they are very beneficial to the garden. Wasps and hornets feed their young on caterpillars and other insects -- literally hundreds per day -- thereby controlling many garden pests without pesticides. For this reason, I leave the wasp nests be, unless they are in a human traffic area where they might sting someone. Which brings me to what you probably mean by "evil." Wasps do not attack out of malice or evilness --they attack to defend their nests. The only time I have ever been stung is when I have either disturbed a nest or gotten too close to one. Otherwise, the wasps go about their business and I go about mine.

However, there are some perfumes and other scented body products that can attract and even infuriate insects -- which is why outdoors people "in the know" don't wear scented products when working or playing outdoors. (I use unscented Ivory soap when camping or hiking, with unscented deodorant also.)

Wasps do become more aggressive and bothersome in the fall, when breeding is done and the wasp colony switches from eating insects to sweets. This is when the yellow jacket wasps seem to suddenly become a big nuisance at picnics and other outdoor events. All summer long you hardly ever see one, then suddenly they are everywhere. That's because they were eating caterpillars before, but are now more interested in sugar and, in some cases, meat carrion (such as your hot dog!) But again, they are "attacking" you when they buzz around your table -- they just want your food!

P.S. to gr_bateman below: If wasps are attracted to you and seem "sting for the fun of it," ask yourself why? There is always a reason for things in nature -- only humans are irrational. So --are you wearing perfume or other products with a scent that infuriates them?? I work at a summer camp and when a girl (yes, it's usually a girl) is a bug magnet, invariably it turns out to be caused by her perfume, hairspray, hair goop, body lotion, or some other product. Insects communicate by scent, and some of these scented products infuriate them. So -- give the girl a bar of Ivory, send her to the showers, tell her NOT to put on any of these products -- and 99% of the time the problem is solved.

Because they've declared war upon the human race and are not content to stop their evil ways until they've killed us all.

Fun fact: Wasps are capable of feeling three distinct emotions:
1. Angry
2. Very Angry
3. Pissed The **** Off

They just can't help themselves. I disagree with some of the answers. Wasps do not leave you alone when ur not annoying them, they just sting for the fun of it. Carry wasp killer spray with you. Or chuck water. Or do what I do and run. I been running from them for years and have yet to be stung.

I still haven't worked out what wasps are actually *for*. They don't make honey, they don't help break down waste... So they must just be evil.

I don't like to kill them or do anything mean because it just makes them worse (a bit like the fat kid at school taunting the bully). Generally running away is the only answer.

They aren't evil as such. It is in their nature to defend themselves and fight for food.

Had a wood wasp in the garden over the weekend - boy, those things are BIG. Can't believe something that scary could be harmless......

They're doing what they were designed to do. Wasps, Hornets and the like are the predators of the insect world. Sometimes our world collides with theirs.

Most bees die when they sting, so they only sting when they are seriously threatened. Wasps, on the other hand, can--and do--sting as often as they like with no adverse effect on them. You don't even have to disturb their home, you just have to be in the general neighborhood of their nests, and they go into attack mode. I suspect, like you do, that they enjoy attacking!

Hornets are evil; wasps are mischievous.

Biologically? because they have an inbuilt desire to sting. They are evil in the justice sense because they don't die like bees after they have stung their victim.
