I was digging in the garden at the weekend and found a bone, is there anyway I can find out what it is from?

The bone is to big for a cat or a dog, its looks abit like it could be the spine of something.

Send it to the appropriate department (anthropology?) of your local university - you may get an answer there.

the spine of something would look like many roundish bones in a row, if this one is a single, long thick bone it may be human. If it is about a foot long or so, then i would phone the police so they can find the rest of the body that some nutter has buried in your backyard.

Grab a book and try comparing it with pictures of known animals until you get a match or at least a decent maybe. If its well known and identifieable, then good. If its rarerer then you may have found something cool and your local museum may be interested.
If it turns out to be human, call the police and dont disturb the ground anymore.

Try showing it to a museaum it probably be of some extinct animal. Or take it to the police. You can also try to find the whole skelewton.

Try contacting a biology professor at the local university if you have one, maybe they can tell you, or direct you to someone who may know.

I to dug up a bone last year while destroying my garden..........................for the next two weeks i believe its owner was haunting me ! , got to the stage where i had to take tablets to help me sleep ! my advice would be to put it back where you found it !

You could take it to a vet. Probably best to ring the surgery and ask.
