To heck with all that upper body stuff. Put a Crocodile or alligator in the pool and jump in. Guarenteed you swim the fastest you ever have.

Lifting weights helps. Do shoulder and tricep workouts. If you don't feel like hitting the gym, try swimming with a drag suit and/or a pull bouy for a while. Just remember, while upper body strength is important, the kick is what really moves you. I've heard that an Olympic swimmer averages six kicks a second or something like that. But they do have huge upper bodies too. If you're dedicated I say lift weights, work on a fast kick, and a fast turn-over too.

Swimmers, can saying a few words to yourself while you are in the ocean or swimming pool make a difference in how you swim? Can what you think or say to yourself while you swim in a race change what happens? Swimmers could benefit - and swim faster - by applying a little sports psychology. Use positive, powerful words and affirmations to build a strong self-image and achieve swimming success.
While you are swimming, if you say a few words that strengthen or build your self image, you will cancel out some of the negative things encountered during a workout or race. Repeating a short, positive phrase or a few power words will help you ignore distractions and outside influences like:
* Minor aches and pains
* Other swimmers' distracting antics
* How many repeats you still need to complete to finish a set that seems to be going on forever
* The homework you still have left to do today
* The person swimming RIGHT behind me, touching my toes every other stroke
Saying a few, simple words or a short phrase, over and over, works like self-hypnosis.

Practice. Exercise. Kick faster. It works.
Also run around a lot more. If you're a fast runner, you should be able to swim at least half as fast as you can run. Your legs are the key to swimming faster. Trust me. I tried swimming without using my legs, and I rolled around and swam so slow!

Do excercises to strengthen your upper part and also leg excercises are good as well. You use both when swimming. Leg work is just as important when swimming faster. :)
