i saw the film capricorn one, which was about a faked mars landing. it got me thinking. what evidence could we have to say it was faked, and what references (used for comparitive research) do we have to prove that it was real? what do you believe?

just a reminder. i said i saw the movie and it got me thinking. my belief doesn't support a hoax but the possibility of a hoax. i have to be open to all ideas, but i believe it did happen. the moon landing was real, and such a hoax would have been exposed by now, like the Roswell alien autopsy which is now truely known as fake, the moonlanding is still as real as it gets.

I'm pleased with the answers. and i agree that especially the USA should be proud of the achievement.

Conspiracies are often made by those who are disenchanted by good things. Such wonders cannot be a part of their world so to think up a conspiracy that disproves it gives people the "man behind the curtain pretending to be the wizard of Oz" satisfaction. Some people tend to believe something is fake because they themselves do not believe that their world, such amazing wonders cannot happen.

i'm convinced by your responses that a little faith cna go a long way. Why should anyone want to fake such a beautiful thing. as long as we keep that faith, we will be able to expore further in the future, afterall, exploration is a very positive human attribute. some people forget to "explore", instead they end up spending their lives "searching" for reasons not to. thanks for your answers

No.

The simple thing is, you can do science with the data Apollo brought back. If it was a fake, virtually every astronomer, myself included, would have to be in on it.

You can't do much better than to visit the Bad Astronomy website, where Dr Phil has the definitive rebuttal of the hoax nonsense.

http://www.badastronomy.com/bad/tv/foxapollo.html

On a personal note, I'd like to add that I don't really get why so many people, especially Americans, who I would have expected to be proud of the achievement, seem to want to believe this amazing adventure never happened. Is it just love of conspiracy for it's own sake?

You've seen the evidence, such as pictures, moon rocks and astronauts who say they've been there.

Of course, such things could still be faked. You are right to retain a healthy skepticism.

Here's what convinces me: A huge number of people participated in the moon landings. Not one reputable person has come forward to say that it was all a hoax. (Cranks such as at certain of the writers here do not fall into the category of reputable.)

Billions and billions were spent, and no one in Congress or the White House said, wait a minute, this is all a hoax.

Walter Cronkite led the CBS coverage. Walter is one of the most respected journalists in the world. He has never admitted to participating in the hoax.

The same goes for literally millions of others around the world who were involved in some way.

I could go into the reams and reams of scientific evidence gleaned from the landings. Some will always carp that in one minor respect or another, a particular piece of evidence might have been faked (for instance, they'll say that no stars are visible, an anomaly easily explained by the fact that the foreground where the astronauts landed was brightly illuminated by the sun), but overwhelmingly the evidence has been found robust in nearly four decades of scientific research. If a reputable scientist could demonstrate to the satisfaction of his colleagues that the landing was a fake, think of how rich and famous he'd be. Think of how rich the cranks currently "debunking" the lunar landing, without any evidence, are getting!

I guess the proof of the pudding would be, how does the Asker know that "Capricorn One" is a fake? If he can answer that one, he'll shed light on how we know the moon landing is true.

Let's think about this, constructively, with an open mind. In order for the moon landings to have been a fake - it would have taken so many people - tens of thousands of people to be in on it. From July 1969 to the present, through 8, 9 or 10 moon landings, I am not sure how many there would have been...

Every single person in NASA, some from the military (remember the navy ships that had to pick up the returning astronauts) - all of the networks, including PBS - many people from the newspapers and magazines - government officials. After listing all of these, the number of people involved could have been in the millions. Now, don't you think, after more than 30 some years - SOMEBODY would've talked and leaked their little scam? Do you think that they could've bribed all these people or knocked off the ones who were going to talk?

Conspiracy theories are just that - theories, that require much bigger imaginations, much more extensive leaps of faith to entertain than the actual story they are trying to debunk. Do you know that telescopes can actually see the stuff that the astronauts left behind on the moon?

Why would the government, media, and everyone else go to all this trouble to fake something like this - what would be accomplished? You believe a movie - which is all fake and controls all the events and everything, but you don't believe all the factual evidence that has been put forth to show that these landings took place? I don't know if the evidence exists that could prove it to someone like that, as the conspiracy whackos seem more absolute in their delusions than any physical evidence could ever be produced.

(Edited to add:)
I just read dumbchild's rant - he goes on and on and on about all these supposed experts and highly qualified scientists - and he's got nothing but supposed lighting problems and a coke bottle that was edited out? Yeah right - it was the moon people - do you know what happens to light and shadows and camera angles on a place 250,000 miles from here that you have never visited? Are all the lighting and shadow rules going to be the same as here? You've no doubt been there so you can vouch for the veracity of all this nonsense. Give it up - if this was the biggest swindle in the history of the world, I'll happily die a fool - because there is no way anyone could have pulled off something of this magnitude. I suppose Neil Armstrong was the same guy who pulled the trigger on JFK from the grassy knoll in Dallas, in November, 1963, too.

Give me a break. Has everyone taken leave of their senses? The same can be said of all the 9/11 nuts who have nothing to back up their case either. Just because you keep saying something, and keep wanting to believe it, does not make it true.

the moon landing was not faked. Others have offered many proofs as to why not let me add two more; TheLunar Module-the LM.
In all the history of science fiction writing nobody had ever dreamt that such a light fragile space craft would land on the moon. The LM was the first true spacecraft in that it was designed only to fly in space. It had no seats, tissue paper thin walls .and was not in the least bit aerodynamic. Only very strict engineering necessities would have created such a creature. Artists and designers don't do LMs
The guys that flew them;
Most were test pilots and test pilots are no BS ,push the envelope guys
They had too much professional integrity to tolerate or participate in a hoax.

I once thought like you did...but think about it. America was in a race with the Russians tto make the first moon landing. The Russians were watching the mission very closely and if they had the slightest doubt that it was a hoax they would have kicked up a big stink about it! Russia made no fuss and just accepted that it happened. That itself is enough proof for me...but its still interesting to think that it might be one of the worlds best hoaxes!

Go watch the debunk movie about the conspiracy nuts who think the moon landing was a fake. It will open your eyes. There are a lot of conspiracy nuts out there now who will come up with all kinds of ridiculous things. Have you heard the one about how it was Clinton that planned the 9-11 event because he was mad that Gore lost the election? There are a lot of gullible people out there.

If the moon landings were faked, how do you explain the presence of laser reflectors and other instruments which are detectable on the surface of the moon from here on earth?

No conspiracy theorist has, to my knowledge, answered that one.

Dumbchild, why bother putting a link on if you're going to post the entire ****ing page?!?!? Why not just put a synopsis of the arguement, and let people go to the link if they want more info?

Yours is truly an apt name.......

I watched a programme the other night and it said the Apollo on board computer had the calculating power of a digital watch. I think it would be difficult to land on the moon with today's technology never mind the technology they had then. I have to say the landings were faked.

The moon itself is a NASA hoax ordered by George Bush. He's also responsible for crab grass, rust on railroad tracks, the kidnapping of the Tooth Fairy, and the wart on my nose.

Only idiots are fooled by that prehistoric camera work studios in california had to offer in those days. I can do better and make it more believeable with a piece of paper and a crayon. Got the soviets pissed off though! Mission accomplished!
