I used to smoke 20 cigs a day, for 42 years, but gave up 4 years ago. I now want to start a running programme to keep fit/lose weight, but finding myself very breathless. I used to be very active and sporty whilst a smoker. I am almost 60. Will my lung capacity improve if I keep at it?

It will take time to rid your lungs of the crap that cigs put down there but keep at it, you will get fitter and your lung capacity will improve.

Well done for stopping, do you feel good about yourself?

Keep at it mate.

NO. THE DAMAGE IS DONE BUT IT WILL SLOW DOWN THE HEART DAMAGE. TRY DOING EXCERISE SLOWLY THEN AS TIME GOES ON INCREASE IT. AS YOUR NOT TAKING IN ENOUGH 0XYGEN BECAUSE OF YOUR LUNGS THIS IN TURN WILL HAVE AN EFFECT ON YOUR BRAIN. GOING INTO EXCERISE AT YOUR AGE TOO QUICKLY MAY WELL PUT YOU INTO YOUR LOCAL A+E DEPARTMENT. SORRY
