No - he would have to nationalize the gas pumps and take over stations as federal facilities - the last thing he wants to do because it would destroy the free market system and leave other businesses vulnerable to socialization.

Gas prices haven't soared since Bush was President. They've soared since Clinton was ending his second term as President. OPEC controls all the oil prices, no matter who is President. They were the ones who jacked up the price of gas in 1973, when Nixon was President, in 1978, and 1979 when Carter was President, and since 1999 when Clinton was President through the Bush Administration. Besides that, America isn't the only country where the price of a barrel of oil is going up and hurting the consumer.

Don't blame the president for high gas prices. Blame China. Chinese energy use has exploded in the past few years, driving up demand, and therefore prices. I suppose Bush could nuke China back to the Ming Dynasty, therefore lowering prices but causing the death of over half the world's population.
Or, we Americans could stop driving around in massive steel monstrosities that get 10 MPG. That might help a little.

I would think that the President should be able to make the oil companies drop their prices. Maybe offer a tax break for helping out their fellow Americans. BUT he won't because he's an oil man and all his buddies are oil men and they're loving their $10 BILLION in profit for 1 quarter!

Yes, despite popular belief. He can by doing any of the following:
1- Lowering the tax bracket on gasoline - so instead of the government making more money, citizens will be able to save each time they pump up
2- By increasing the production of North American reserves. The U.S believe it or not has the largest reserves of oil in the world. The government is saving them and importing from other countries. If you increase the production, the prices will decline!!

Since Bush and Cheney own oil stocks, why would they do anything? The higher the oil company profits, the more money they make. Yes, the president could do something, but will not.

If our current president can override the constitution and hire unquailified individuals for high governmental positions, I would think that he has the ability to do something about the gas prices. I would hate to think that he chooses to do whatever he wants rather legal or not with everything else and when it comes to oil prices, he chooses to play by the book and not interfere.

Not directly, I mean he can't go to the oil companies and tell them what prices to use (the fact that he wouldn't want to is another issue), but by the policies that a government uses, the prices on the market could go down.

He has no power to dictate what private industry charges for a product.
The price of gas has been going up from the time we invented the car. Did people complain about Clinton not doing anything about it? No.

We live in a free market economy. The goverment can however place price ceilings and floors on certain products to maintain a steady price, however this type of legistration is not taken lightly.
