QuickTime Pro (not free) can export a .mov as an .avi.

I'm not aware of any free programs that will do this.

um, some of your answers so far are incorrect.

First there are about a million programs to do this.
http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=mov+to+avi&meta=

and it is true that most of them are 'shareware' meaning they offer a trial use but then you have to pay about $30 to continue using the program.

However, there are some freeware or open source solutions as well:

MP4Cam2AVI

Rad Video Tools (I've used this one before)
http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=Rad_Video_Tools

and lots of others here:
http://www.videohelp.com/tools?convert=MOV%20to%20AVI

or possibly here:
http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=mov+to+avi+open+source&meta=

just make sure to check weather the program is freeware/open source or shareware/payware
