you don't have to claim housing benefit or council tax benefit, though depending on what other people are doing for work in the household you would be silly not to if you are entitled as you would recieve the full bill.
check out your local councils website, they have a benefits calculator which will tell you if you are entitled to any relief from your housing costs given the wage you are thinking of working for.
this means before you take a job you know how much benefit you will get on the wage you are going to earn rather than starting work and finding you are worse off.
if you do go back to work though there are Working and Child tax credits dependant on your circumstances, these can really help you top up a low wage and make it very worthwhile to be back working, tough once they are awarded they might remove you entitlement to housing benefit and council tax benefit so be careful.
telephone for Tax Credits is 0845 3003900

I am a female support worker. yes you can claim Housing benefit if your income is low, you will need to go to the neighbourhood office to fill in the housing benefit form, take with you all wage slips and bank details and i.d as they will ask for all of this, they will then work out how much housing benefit they can pay you, you may have to pay some small amount to make sure that your rent is covered. Good Luck xx

You are still entitled to housing benefit and council tax benefit if your income is low and you stop claiming JSA. As they are both means tested benefits.
Go to your local CAB for advice.

If your income is low you can apply for housing benefit assistance, my friend did it and all he had to do was take in payslips that proved his low income and he received financial help!
