Squirrels are damn crafty rodents. If they want something bad enough they will find a way to get it. They are actually pretty humorous to watch. Depending on what type of garbage can you have, the best way is to have lids that snap or latch, if that isn't available, then a lid on top with something heavy on that(couple of bricks). Or if you can't beat em' get a smaller separate can fill it full of pecans or dried corn and let em have it. If they have that, they won't touch your garbage.

spray lid and inside with a bit of clorox,then sprinkle a bit of cayenne pepper around it.

cover it very tightly and duct tape the cover on. (put lots of tape so other animals can't get in either.)
