the picture from my dvd or digi box often flickers and only returns to normal when i jiggle the scart socket. i have ruled out the lead so it can only be the socket

Easy. Buy a new one. Pull the old one out. Put the new one in.

You would need to dismantle the set to get to the socket and even then there would be no guarantee that a repair will work. It would not be too difficult to dismantle so that you have access top the socket wiring/attachment. You will probably need a to remake the joints with a soldering iron. Some experience of doing soldering will be necessary to make a good job of it.

It sounds like you have dry joints. These can easily be cured be manually resoldering the connnections on the board. The hardest bit will be removing and reinserting the board when you finish. Make sure the power is off when you do it though

If you are sure it isnt the lead then you may be better off buying a new tv. Think it wouldnt be worth your while having it fixed.

It's really easy, buy a new one for a few pounds and plug it in the back.
