Paint some squares of lining paper in your chosen colours.(try to keep it to 5 max) And then you can test the different colours around the room. Remember to view the colour under natural and artificial light as this makes a big difference to the look.

Grab some paint samples of your colors or small quarts, then cut out about a 12"x12" piece of cardboard for each color. Paint each piece of cardboard with a respective color. Slap a ring of blue painter's tape on the back and stick them up on the wall next to major objects in the room. Leave them up for 2-3 days. You want to look at them in sunlight (day), shadow (evening/sunset), and with only lights on (night). This will help you get an idea what your colors will look like by all of the major objects in the room in all of the different lighting situations. Remember, incandescent looks different that flourescent. By the end of 2-3 days, should be easy to tell which is your favorite color. I like the 12"x12" piece of cardboard idea that I came up with because you can move it around and you have a large sample of it to look at. Better yet, if you go furniture shopping take the painted cardboard with you and now you can see what your furniture will look like against the color you want to paint. I figured this technique out after working on painting my family room, kitchen, and entry way. The rooms are open concept and connect together so I wanted to go with one color (no good place to divide the rooms), I had to deal with incandescent, flourescent, and natural lighting, and due to the builders messing up also had to deal with two completely different stains of wood. Talk about a designing nightmare! After about the 4th attempt at painting it, I came up with this process. The room looks beautiful now, done in Prairie Grass green. I took the builder's mistake and used it to my advantage. Now the stairwell where I hated the stain looks awesome due to the color I painted the room.
